“Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy.

You levy a straw tax on the poor
and impose a tax on their grain.

Therefore, though you have built stone mansions,
you will not live in them;
though you have planted lush vineyards,
you will not drink their wine.
For I know how many are your offenses
and how great your sins.

The poor still pay payroll, property, sales, and in many cases, state income tax as well.

Note that the rich can manage to avoid many of these taxes. In CA, the most expensive properties pay very little property tax due to Prop 13. They don't pay payroll taxes (as most doesn't come from W-2 income) and don't pay any at all above $120k/yr or so. And there's no sales tax if you don't spend it, which you don't need to when you aren't living paycheck to paycheck.

As I've said elsewhere this week, a fair section of the American population has never been happy that nobility was abolished by the Constitution. So they replaced title with wealth.

This is just the modern nobility bitching about the peasants, who are not blessed by God.

Taxing the poor is really bad economic policy as well. Most of the poor and middle class spend virtually all their money as it comes in, so money taken away from them is taken right out of the economy.
